I made my first whippet sculpture (Maggie at two months old) in the winter of 2003, as a Christmas gift for my mother and step-father. I thought it was a good idea because my parents like small sculptures, and they love their whippets, but they couldn't find many small whippet sculptures - most sculpting materials wouldn't allow a whippet-proportioned sculpture to support its own weight without the legs breaking. My girlfriend, Leah (who is also an artist), had recently introduced me to a polymer clay called Super Sculpey, which is much more durable than sculptural clay, ceramic, or porcelain, and seemed well suited to sculpting whippets. The sculpture was so well received by my parents that I sculpted them three more: Dena as a pup, Dena stacked after her first Best of Breed win, and Dena and Maggie full grown, laying on each other (and with Christmas coming up again, more sculptures might be on the way *wink*).
This past summer I started sculpting for other dog owners. I create fully customized, one of a kind sculptures of their pups, from the pictures they send me. I can sculpt them in any position (check out the positions of Choice, Raz and Rikki), and I am open to trying any breed of dog (I recently sculpted Moxi, a German Shepherd), and I may soon try cats as well. |
